Policies

​- G e n e r a l  I n f o r m a t i o n -
  • Age cut offs for ALL sections are as of January 1st, the year of the competition. In the circumstance that a dancers birthday falls on the 1st of January, the entry will fall into the higher age section. 
  • Competitors enter their routines at their own risk. Olympia Dance Competition accepts NO responsibility for accident or injury to any persons associated with this event, involving Competitor Volunteer, or member of the general public, at any time. 

  • Competition Director/s reserve the right to overrule any rules of the event and any time. The Competition Director/s shall make all final decisions on any matter/s not covered by these rules and their decision regarding any question/ dispute will be final. 

  • There can not be any prompting, whistling, speaking etc. during any performance to ‘coach’ the competitor during performance during the competition. 

  • Privacy is important to Olympia Dance Competition. We will not distribute any form of information of our entrants to any third party. 

  • By submitting your entry into Olympia Dance Competition, you agree to receiving emails from Olympia Dance Competition in regards to competition events, advertising or marketing emails for time to time. 

  • Any results and scores will not be published on any social media sites and will not be distributed to any people outside of the competition staff. 

  • Olympia Dance Competition reserves the right to alter competition days or move locations due to unforeseen circumstances and entries will not be refunded. 

  • The plea of lack of knowledge of any guidelines and rules will not be accepted as a reason for challenging/not adhering to any of the rules of Olympia Dance Competition at any time. 

  • The use of photos/videos for marketing purposes is granted to Olympia Dance Competition upon participation at any event which Olympia Dance Competition may hold. 

- A d j u d i c a t o r - 
  • If a judge is unable to perform his/her duties for any reason, Olympia Dance Competition holds the right to appoint a new judge without notice.
  • All decisions made by the adjudicator is final. Please don not speak to or approach the judge at any time during the competition.

- A d m i t t a n c e -
  • Olympia Dance Competition director/s reserve the right to refuse entry to any person.
  • In the event that the auditorium becomes full, competitors will be asked to leave the auditorium to free up seats for paying patrons.

  • Mobile phones are to be placed on silent when inside the auditorium, and shall not be permitted for use to take photos/videos at any time whilst inside the auditorium. 

  • Entry or exit from the auditorium is NOT to take place whilst a dancer is performing as this is distracting for the dancers.

  • Entry fees are as follows:​​​​

    • Adults: $15
    • Children (non-competitiors): $10

    • Concession/Pension: $12

- A g e  G r o u p s -
  • Age groups offered are as follows for solos, duos/trios, and all groups:
    • ​6&U
    • 8&U

    • 10&U

    • 12&U

    • 14&U

    • 15& Above

*Duo/Trio ages will be taken as of the oldest dancer in the routine. 

*The group age limit is determined by the average age of the troupe. This is calculated by adding all ages of dancers involved, as per their age on January 1st, and then divided by the total number of dancers participating in the troupe. This will need to be calculated for each troupe, given that the various routines have different dancers involved. If the number comes to a decimal when calculating you must round UP to the next age (Example: average age is 12.5, the average age will be rounded to 13 years old and the troupe would compete 14&Under).

*In the event that a competitor/s compete in the wrong age section, Olympia Dance Competition hold the right to disqualify this entrant from the relevant section. 

- G e n r e s -
  • Jazz- Choreography containing movements based on Jazz Technique. Often performed to music with an upbeat tempo.

  • Tap- Choreography consisting of tap technique. This section is for of all styles of tap including fast, slow, melody etc.

  • Lyrical- Choreography containing expressive movements, derived from ballet technique, through interpretation of chosen song. Must demonstrate balance, flexibility and control.

  • Contemporary- Choreography containing interpretive movements using balance and control. 

  • Hip Hop- Choreography containing movements the foundations of hip hop, street dance or jazz funk. 

  • Classical- Choreography must contain ballet technique and steps, but lyrical music can also be utilised (neo classical).

  • Character/Demi Character- Character must involve or resemble a character dance or follows a storyline that uses classical technique as a basis for interpretation. Demi Character dance must involve ballet technique and demonstrate a story line through interpretive movements and acting. Portrays a character of some kind both can be performed en pointe. 

  • Broadway/Musical theatre- Contains jazz technique with cabaret style movements to a broadway or musical based song. Can include inspiration of movement from fosse styled dance.

  • Acro- Choreography containing acrobatic or gymnastic technique and movements. 

  • Exemplary- a section for advanced dancers who will enter a solo of any genre to compete for the exemplary title. For this section a dancer is able to enter either a solo that has already been performed in another section of the competition or a solo that has not been competed in another section of the competition. This section will only have a Winner and a Runner Up. 

- C o n d i t i o n s  o f  e n t r y -
  • Entries will close when the competition is FULL, so please enter as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. Entries that have not been paid for will not be accepted until payment has been received. 
  • Troupe routines must have a minimum of 4 performers in order to qualify for a troupe entry.

  • Any false information provided to Olympia Dance Competition will result in immediate disqualification, upon investigation. 

  • All routines are entered at the responsibility of parents or studio teachers and are expected to be entered into the correct age group and section of the competition. The adjudicator holds the right to make all decisions on discrepancies and these decisions will be final.

  • In the case of a dispute arising in respect of the age of any competitor and his/her eligibility to compete in any age grouping, the Olympia Dance Competition staff reserve the right to require production of a birth certificate or formal proof of age from that competitor. 

  • Competitor pass is compulsory for EVERY entrant, and must be worn in order to be present in the backstage area. Olympia Dance Competition hold the right to ask anyone without a pass to exit these areas.

  • By submitting an entry and completed payment, you will have agreed to all the terms and conditions made by Olympia Dance Competition. 

  • No pre-recorded tap sounds are permitted in tap routines.

  • Dup/Trio entrants can only perform once in a section, unless it is with a different partner.

  • Soloist can only enter one routine per section in order to avoid holding up the competition.

  • In the event of a withdrawal from the competition it will be at the competition directors discretion to make all decisions around refunds. 

- M u s i c - 
  • All music, lyrics and dance attire MUST be age appropriate.
  • All music to be uploaded through LINK

  • Although your music has been uploaded, entrants must check in with our front of house staff 60 minutes prior to the commencement of your section.

  • Time limits are the maximum allowed and will be counted from the moment the music or dialogue commences. If performers go over this, you will receive a 5 point deduction, the rule is non-negotiable. Time limits are as follows:​​​​​​

    • Solos- 3 minutes

    • Duo/trios- 3 minutes

    • Troupes- 4 minutes

  • Please be sure to have a backup of your music ready if required. (backup can be held on a USB, phone/Ipad etc.)

  • Entrants must understand and adhere to copyright responsibilities. Olympia Dance Competition will not be held responsible for any acts of copyright, royalty or privacy laws by individual performers or persons associated with the performance.

  • All items entered into Olympia Dance Competition will incur a Music Licensing Fee upon checkout. 

  - C o s t u m e s  A N D  S T A G E  A T T I R E -
  • ALL costumes must be age appropriate. Olympia Dance Competition holds the right to disqualify any entrant with inappropriate costuming or movements. 

  • Appropriate footwear must be worn for Tap, Classical and Character (including pointe or demi pointe). Unless specifically required for character or costume reasons, dancers must wear two shoes or half soles, or bare feet. Failure to wear the appropriate footwear will result in point deduction. 

  • Any part of the costume or prop that remains on the stage after the performance is complete, to the point where a member of staff/studio teacher or competitor has to remove item/s from the stage/ with result in a 5 point deduction, due to the increased risk for other competitors.

- P r o p s -
  • Props can be used; however, it is the entrants/studio teachers responsibility to place them in the allocated prop area, have them labelled, and bring them on/off stage throughout the competition. 

  • Safety is most important with the use of props. Olympia Dance Competition does not take responsibilities for any injuries caused utilising props of any kind. 

  • Props MUST be included within the routine choreography, any stage sets will NOT be permitted. 

  • Any props left over at the completion of the competition will be placed in the bin. 

  • Free standing props will be allocated a 1 minute time allowance for preparation prior to commencement of an item. 

  • Props must be removed immediately after the competitor has finished the item.

- P e r f o r m a n c e - 
  • A parent/guardian/competitor must check in with the front of house staff 60 minutes prior to your section commencing so we know you are performing.
  • If the competitor leaves the stage at any time mid-dance , they will be offered the opportunity to perform again, however, they will only receive their audio critique and will not be eligible for an award placement. This rule is at the discretion of the competition director/s and is subject to the circumstance at the time.

  • No competitors will be penalised for any technical difficulties. 

  • Entrants must remain on stage throughout their performance (i.e, no jumping off of the stage, going into the audience etc.)

- B a c k s t a g e -
  • ALL entrants must be present backstage at least 3 acts prior to their scheduled performance. 

  • Entrants MUST check in with the member of staff controlling music side stage.

  • There is to be no congregating in the wings during a performance on stage. 

  • Noise must be kept to a minimum, or Olympia Competition Staff hold the authority to ask people to leave the backstage areas. 

  • All entrants and associated parties must always follow the direction of the backstage staff members.

- D r e s s i n g  R o o m s -
  • No photography or video will be permitted in any dressing rooms for safety of competitors. 
  • All items left in the dressing rooms is left at you own risk. Olympia Dance Competition will not be responsible for any damage, loss etc that occurs to items in dressing rooms. 

  • Dressing rooms are to be utilised for practice and rehearsal of all routines for the duration of the competition. Dancers are NOT to utilise any other areas on the premises for safety of all other people in attendance of the competition. 

  • Only studio teachers and competitors are permitted to spend time in the dressing rooms for privacy and safety of competitors. Parents are permitted to take children to dressing rooms to help carry costumes, props, bags etc, however, are asked to leave the dressing rooms after. Failure to comply will result in removal from the premises, including the entrant. 

- P h o t o g r a p h y  a n d  V i d e o -
  • No photography or video will be permitted in any dressing rooms or while the performers are on stage; this will result in immediate disqualification. 
  • _____ will be taking photos of competitors through the competition that will be available to purchase on the day. 

  • _____ will be taking videos of competitors through the competition that will be available to purchase on the day.

 

- P r o g r a m -
  • A draft program will be sent out at the earliest convenience, after the closing of entires, for parents/guardians/entrants to check. You will have 1 week from the date the draft timetable is available to request any changes. A FINAL timetable will then be released in the lead up to competition day and no changes will be able to be made to the program once the final copy has been sent. 

  • Olympia Dance Competition reserve the right to divide items with excessive numbers and combine age groups where there are insufficient entries. 

  • Olympia Dance Competition also hold to the right to amend the program at any time, if necessary.

- S c o r e s -
  • Technique (40%): How the dancer demonstrates correct technique with the selected section.
  • Performance and Execution (30%): How the dancer executes spacing, timing and precision; Also how they emote to the music with movement and correct energy.

  • Choreography (20%): How the choreography uses the stage, music, and the talent of the dancer. Needs to also demonstrate creativity

  • Costume and Music (10%): Costume and music needs to appropriately match the age group and style in a tasteful way. This area of the score is where deductions will occur for inappropriateness. 

- S a f e t y -
  • Bullying, including inappropriate comments or actions will NOT be tolerated by Olympia Dance Competition and will result in immediate disqualification, upon investigation. 
  • Olympia Dance Competition will not be held responsible for any injuries sustained by any entrant throughout the event. 

  • No harmful agents eg fire, smoke, water etc. will be allowed on stage. 

  • All equipment used on the competition premises must be tested by a technician. 

  • The competitor will follow all directions and set rules stated by the competition director/s or staff and waives any claims for liability against all competition staff and event organisers and releases the participants from all liability that may arise out of the competition to the competitor. Such liability shall include any personal injury, property loss or damage.
